It was a new name on the trophy as Iwan Roberts (TRRS UK) was crowned the 2020 ACU Trial GB British champion.

In a shortened four-round championship held observing the strict Covid-19 government guidelines, riders took on three laps of twelve separate sections over a compact course at Dudwood Farm near Matlock.

Under an overcast autumnal sky, a variety of sections consisting of streams, muddy banks and rocks challenged the rider’s skills with a five-hour time limit to keep them moving. A total of sixty riders were entered across the four classes Trial GB, Trial 2, Trial 125, Expert classes.

Initially the ACU championship had a proposed eight rounds, but this was shortened to a four round championship due to the Covid 19 restrictions which came into force in late March after round one. In these difficult times six of the seven ACU Trial GB British championship riders from Great Britain opted out of rounds two and three due to their FIM Trial World Championship commitments in Europe.

As the early morning mist hovered over Dudwood Farm it was Toby Martyn who opened up the single mark lead over Dan Peace on lap one with a single five mark penalty on the very difficult section ten which stopped the whole entry.

2019 champion James Dabill was in close attendance with just two marks behind.

On the second lap Peace came fighting back with the best lap score parting with four marks lost and taking the lead from Martyn.

Marks were still close by the last lap, so it was all to play for. Martyn lost just three more marks, all in singles. While both Dan Peace and James Dabill stopped again in section ten, Martyn passed though for a single mark taking the victory from the elder of the two Peace brothers, Dan, by one mark. Dabill finished third a further three marks adrift.

Toby Martyn:I am very happy with my victory today and I am sure that if I had been able to contest the full four rounds I would have been in the fight to take the championship title. This venue turned out to be a very challenging course, which changed constantly over the three laps. Mud from the slippery riverbanks was carried onto the rocks and the hazards became very polished and slippery. In these conditions tyre choice is essential and the feedback and feel from the Michelin tyres gave me the confidence to fight for the win after a closely contested opening lap”

“On my second lap the hard work on the opening one was soon undone as I stopped in section one. With Dan Peace posting the lowest lap score on the second of just four marks I had to be at my very best on the final lap to secure the victory, which I did just losing three marks. Once again the Michelin trials tyres have proved vital to my success showing how they can adapt to the changing conditions we have encountered at here today.”

Iwan Roberts: “These are not the best circumstances to win the championship in, but I am very happy to take the 2020 ACU British Trials championship and the first for the Spanish manufacture TRRS. The trials at Dudwood Farm are always very technical, but I enjoyed it and I must thank everyone in these difficult times for making it happen”.
