Two OSET Cup rounds will take place in the North this weekend. Saturday sees the second round of the OSET Cup North at a new venue for the series – Inch Perfect Trials nr May Clitheroe. While on Sunday the third round of the Cheshire OSET Cup moves to Alvanley Trials Ground, off the M56 nr Frodsham.
With nearly 100 riders expected across the weekend, it demonstrates the growth of the sport at the grass roots level the OSET Cups have generated. Both events cater for absolute beginners riding potentially their first ever trial through to national level competitors.
Simon Armstrong from OSET Bikes, who manages the OSET Cup North said: “The aim of the OSET Cups is really to introduce children and parents to trials riding, and educate them about trials and their local clubs. It’s a really easy and safe introduction to the sport. The easiest routes teach beginners, who may never have ridden a section in their life, how to walk the section, follow flags, think about where to start, maintain concentration from beginning to end and negotiate small obstacles with the aim of keeping their feet up.
“Marking for beginners is extremely lenient – the aim is to get in the start flags and out the end flags without falling off and if you do – get back on! Once kids understand what’s involved in riding a section and can ride with their feet on the pedals and standing up – most of the time – they’ll be ready to move up to a more difficult route where marking is stricter. It’s here they will really start to develop skills and techniques that as they progress in ability will see enable them to tackle the hard course.”
This was echoed by Ian Mackman who runs the 2 Machs Cheshire OSET Cup. He said; “We have been known to attract nearly 60 riders per event and as we are now in our third year of running these vents it’s been fantastic to witness the progression of the riders from beginner routes to having the confidence and ability to tackle the hard course. We see rapid progression because the silent nature of OSET Bikes means kids are able to practice techniques and skills in their back garden after school – without annoying the neighbours. Like any sport, practice, practice, practice is what make the difference and that is exactly what OSET Bikes enables kids to do – a fantastic homework motivator!”
Anyone riding needs to be over four years old and hold a current ACU licence. Entry fee for Saturday at Inch Perfect is £12 and the event on Sunday is £10. Riders are required to wear a helmet, ankle covering boots, long sleeves and gloves. Machines require a working wrist lanyard cut-off device and to be in good working order.
