QUICK SPIN – BETA EVO 300cc 2015

So you cannot afford a brand new trials machine? With the news of images and changes released on the new 2016 Beta Evo range why not buy a used 2015 model? Here we take a ‘Quick Spin’ on the 2015 300cc Beta.

The aesthetics of the new 2015 Beta models certainly make them look better, with the predominantly white colour scheme making the machine look very light in weight but how much has changed in reality? More than you would imagine, as you will shortly find out. At first glance the motor looks pretty much the same but it’s not as wide as its predecessor and with the internals and electrics changed, along with the suspension package, was it really a case of the ‘Beta got Better’? The last machine Phil Disney had on test was James Dabill’s Works machine, which we soon found out performed like a bullet! Any aspirations he had of being world champion had been blown away in the first minute, such was the power; that machine was certainly one for the best riders in the world. As for the 2015 Beta EVO 300cc maybe he still could be world champion, as we now find out.

“As my usual mount is a four-stroke it was very refreshing to get back on the two-stroke Beta. I have owned many Betas in the past and I do like them, for their ease of riding as much as anything. The 2015 model is no different in this area as I only needed to adjust the lever blade positions to suit myself. The white colour scheme has certainly improved the looks but that’s not all that has changed. The narrower engine width has been achieved by the use of new electrics and moving the engine fly wheels further in-board. A quick prod on the left-hand mounted kick-start lever soon fires the motor into life. The response from the motor is crisp and sharp and the new engine internals have removed virtually all sensations of vibration”.

“I warmed up on the machine on a steep loose climb that started with a sharp turn at the bottom which removed any speed for my attempt on the hazard. The turning circle gives a flowing, positive feel and the overall balance is very good. Sometimes you feel ‘pushed off’ the machine on steep climbs but the front forks are slightly shorter, giving good body positioning, which in turn inspires confidence. The power is very progressive and it’s very comfortable on small throttle openings, making the machine very easy to ride”.

“Approaching the very top of the climb is where you can use the power a 300cc motor can deliver as I just needed some extra speed to exit the top. The Beta motor still uses the tried and tested Keihin PWK28 for its fuel delivery, which does make you question the need for the more sophisticated fuel injection systems that are now becoming available in the trials market as the throttle response is so crisp and clean”.

“Gear selection is good, as is the clutch action which behaved well all day. The changes in the suspension, both front and rear, are certainly noticeable with more rider feedback through the handlebars and footrest encouraging confident riding. It’s hard to fault the modern trials machine and TM Editor John kept asking me if I could find fault with anything on the machine but I genuinely could not, I really enjoyed riding it – which is more than I can say about James Dabill’s machine! Maybe, just maybe I could be world champion on this 2015 model as I felt that good on it”.
