Shieldsberg rodeo and awards presentation

Sunday 2nd of August saw Moto Trial NI running our final trial of the season, The “Shieldsberg Rodeo”.

The event was held at Landscape Supplies yard on Bangor Road Newtownards, across from the Leadmines, with the kind permission of Roy Shields and Ards and North Down Council.

The day also saw the end of season awards ceremony taking place immediately after the event.

The club had marked out a course of ten sections to be attempted over four laps to test the skills of the 77 riders who came along on what was meant to be a bad day weather wise, but being hardy riders the weather didn’t put too many off!!  A number of new sections had been made to test the riders this year.

To try and make things fresh it was decided that the youth C and D riders would start at half ten on the adult course and this seemed to work very well, a great decision by Barry and Laura Smyth to try this out!!

The main trial started at half eleven with the riders being split into their grades to ease any queuing issues.

As usual the Clubman grade was a very tight fought affair. Any one of around ten riders was in contention throughout the day!  At the end of the four laps there was a tie for first place between Robbie Jennings and Stephen Cromie, both riders rode a faultless event ending up on zero marks!  Third was Phillip McClurg on only 1 mark lost.

In the Sportsman grade Darren Pyper rode steady over the four laps to end up winning on only 2 marks lost. Second on 12 was Alan Watson with third place being taken by Alistair Galloway on 15.

In the Beginner grade again it was a close run event, Raymond Mason rode consistently to finish on 4 marks to take the win!!  Jim Lowry was second on 12, with Mark Leighton third on 18.

Into the Youth grades and in Youth A the battle raged throughout the four laps and at the end only a couple of marks separated the top three riders. First on 5 was Jamie Chambers with Ross Pyper next two marks back on 7 , with third being taken by Jordan Nixon a further mark back on 8!

In Youth B Josh Pyper just held off Jamie Nixon for the win. Josh had 13 marks to Jamies’ 16, with Stuart Tweedie third on 27, which was a great result as he was riding an old TY Mono!!!

In Youth C Dylan Smyth rode well to take the win on 12 marks, followed in second by Ross Allen on 19. Third place was taken by Stuart Lappin on 27 marks.

Youth C saw the first of the electric bikes ridden by Harry Smith taking the win on 39 marks with Shannon Smyth second on 52!

The C and D grades showed great effort and determination to take on the full course and all the riders in those grades should be congratulated for this!  Some of the adults found the course tough going, so to complete it on smaller bikes at their tender ages is fantastic!!!

Youth E is for the electric bikes and they had their own separate course and they started at 1pm

The winner on 16 was Ali Holland, second on 22 was Sophie Coulter and third was taken by Ben Scott on 32!

Full results will be posted on the Moto Trial NI web and Facebook pages over the coming days.

Finally on behalf of the club can I thank the landowners, the observers for their assistance and especially the riders for turning up and supporting the event!!
