We are very sad to report the passing of Jeff Smith MBE at the weekend at his home in Canada.
A true ‘Legend’ in the world of motorcycling he won the FIM 500cc Motocross World Championship in 1964 and 1965.
In the world of motorcycle trials, he won the ACU British Trials Championship in 1953 and 1954, Scottish Six Days Trial in 1955 and the Scott Trial in 1954 and 1959.
He also had eight Gold Medals to his name in the ISDT, such was his all-round ability on a motorcycle.
All his achievements were on four-stroke BSA machines, something he was always very proud of.
John Hulme: “This is very sad news after the loss of his close friend Arthur Lampkin just a few weeks previously. I first met Jeff at the 1970 Northern Experts Trial; I still have his autograph from that very day. Watching his talents in the off-road world and in particular Scrambling or Motocross, he was always a very popular and competitive rider. His name is always remembered with his association of BSA and winning in all areas of off-road. I last spoke with Jeff at the 2024 Telford Off-Road Show, his handshake was always well received as was his many stories of his motorcycle years, rest in peace my friend”.
