TEAM OSET – SIMON ARMSTRONG – DAD AND LAD
When you first ride a motorcycle at eight years old it answers a question as to why someone is so passionate about a sport they love. It’s usually a case of ‘dad and lad’ and that’s how Simon Armstrong came into motorcycle trials at such a young age. There was no OSET ‘back in the day’ and the first machine he got to throw a leg over was a Corgi Paratroopers military fold-up model ridden at ‘Scrambles’ that his dad helped to organise at Otley Chevin in the north of the country, with riders like Arthur Lampkin in attendance. It’s perfectly true, and followed the trend so many years ago, that his first trial in 1970 was on a Puch Maxi Moped with the pedals cut off, at Swaine Woods near Leeds. The first full-size motorcycle was a 90cc Gaunt Jawa, which was later converted to a Gaunt Suzuki with an engine purchased from John Hemmingway, the grandad to the youth trials riders Harry and George, yes, the ones that won so much on OSETs.
